Fibromyalgia Symptons

An Overview Of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic and common disease that affects 2-4% people of total world population. Although the cause behind this disease is unknown till date, but the syndromes are very well known.

It is very painful for the people suffering from this disease. The pain is widespread and produces a fatigue disorder. This disease mostly affects muscles, ligaments, tendons and other soft fibres in the body; as a consequence patients feel the pain in the muscle joint areas of body, such as neck, shoulder, elbow and hip.

Some experts take it as a special form of arthritis but the fact is the affected muscles in the body are not deformed like arthritis cases. Fibromyalgia is some sort of neuro-muscular pain, which affects the musculoskeletal schema of human body. Patients can suffer from the following symptoms:

* Widespread pain for more than 3 months.
* Tenderness in the neck, shoulder, knee, elbow, or upper buttocks or thigh areas.
* Trouble sleeping.
* Tiredness in the morning or late in the day.
* Mood changes.
* Irritable bowel syndrome.
* Headaches, sometimes migraines.
* Difficulty concentrating.
* Numbness and tingling in hands, arms, feet, legs or face.
* Abdominal pain.
* Bloating.
* Long lasting morning stiffness
* Constipation.
* Diarrhoea.
* Fatigue that interferes with work and daily activities.
* Sleep problems (difficulty falling or staying asleep, waking up feeling tired).

In addition of those symptoms fibromyalgia patients often feel anxiety along with depression. They feel lethargic and may feel frustrated in their life. This depression often leads them to commit suicide.

Women may also face problems in their periods and suffer from other feminine diseases.

In a recent research it is found that women are more affected than men. It is a common phenomenon that women lacks calcium a bit more than men, this may be the reason behind that.

Fibromyalgia disturbs sleep; this leads to mental weakness and often causes mental disorder. The cause behind this disease is still mystery but the resultant effects are very acute. It generally affects people of any age, some experts have revealed that after a traumatic disease or a massive flue fibromyalgia may starts.

Identifying the tender points in the body makes diagnosis of fibromyalgia syndrome. At the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, other chronic syndromes such as thyroid disturbance, Lyme disease, chronic fatigue syndrome are assumed eliminated. Pain in 11 to 18 tender points indicates fibromyalgia syndrome.

LTryptophan And Fibromyalgia

Alternative Treatments - 5-htp For Depression ;

What is 5-Htp?

5 Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is so-called natural alternative to traditional antidepressants, used to treat unipolar depression and dysthymia. It is an amino acid that is an intermediate step between tryptophan and the mandatory brain chemical serotonin. The human body manufactures 5 htp from a natural amino acid called "L-Tryptophan", which is found naturally in dietry proteins as 5 HTP and is not present in significant amounts in a typical diet.

Benefits:

Depression and anxiety are caused by the decreased level of serotonin in our brain, people who are suffering from fibromyalgia often have low serotonin levels in there blood, serotonin level may increase in these cases by the use of 5-HTP supplements. 5 HTP may also cure abnormal serotonin function in blood vessels, which is the main cause of migraine headaches. It is also found beneficial in Insomnia which is caused by tryptophan deficiency.

In Insomnia:

It is the intermediate precursor of serotonin. Good results have shown by 5-Htp in promoting & maintaining sleep in normal people and those who are suffering from insomnia as well. It is also found beneficial in increasing the quality of sleep.

In Alleviates Migraines and Fibromyalgia Pain:

Migraine sufferers experience periods of abnormally high activity of MAO (Monoamine oxidase) as indicated by latest medical research. MAO is the enzyme which is found to be the cause of serotonin split up. This is proved by the presence of Serotonin Metabolites in the urine of migraine suffers during migraine attacks. 5-Htp is not only found to be beneficial in relieving migraine pain but the frequency and severity of migraine headaches are also reduced.

;

5 Htp Dosage:

Take 1 Vcaps daily, preferably on an empty stomach at bedtime.

5 Htp Precautions:

5 Htp should only be used under supervision of a physician especially in the following cases as increased level of serotonin may be harmful:

1. Cardiovascular diseases 2. Extremely elderly persons 3. People who are suffering from Parkinsons disease 4. Lung disease 5. Chronic Alcoholism 6. Liver Disease 7. Parasitic infection 8. Aids 9. Allergies

Conclusion:

Although research questions are answered by a large number of studies but few are trustworthy. These substances may help in alleviating depression. Further studies are required to confirm 5-Htp safety before it can be widely recommended. It is also not clear how 5 htp helps in Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome. Alternative antidepressants exist which have proven to be effective and safe while the usefulness of 5 htp is still limited.

Some Results from the Rheumatology Unit, L Sacco Hospital, Milan, Italy

The efficacy and tolerability of 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan (5-HTP) were studied in an open 90-day study in 50 patients affected by primary fibromyalgia syndrome. When all the clinical variables studied throughout the trial (number of tender points, anxiety, pain intensity, quality of sleep, fatigue) were compared with baseline results, they all showed a significant improvement (P less than 0.001). The overall evaluation of the patient condition assessed by the patient and the investigator indicated a ‘good’ or ‘fair’ clinical improvement in nearly 50% of the patients during the treatment period. A total of 15 (30%) patients reported side-effects but only one patient was withdrawn from the treatment for this reason. No abnormality in the laboratory evaluation was observed. It is concluded that 5-HTP is effective in improving the symptoms of primary fibromyalgia syndrome and that it maintains its efficacy throughout the 90-day period of treatment.
